Dog & Cat Grooming

Pet Grooming …Show your furry friend how much you love them by having them regularly groomed.  Keeping your pet clean and tidy is one more important way of ensuring a healthy and happy life for your beloved companion. It’s just as crucial as a healthy diet, regular exercise and plenty of hugs and kisses.

Grooming is not just about looking pretty. It’s about giving your pet the quality of life that he so well deserves. We all like to have our hair brushed and our nails manicured and our teeth to be clean and fresh, so what makes you think that our pets don’t need the same type of care and pampering?

At Montreal Dogs, we not only want to pamper your pet, but more importantly, we LOVE pampering them. There is nothing we enjoy more than to see all of our furry or not so furry clients leave here with their tails wagging and their coats smelling fresh and clean or simply not hearing the “click click” from their overgrown nails as they pass us by on their way out.

We hear many clients say “My dog just won’t let me brush him.”;  “He tries to bite me if I groom him”; or “I brush him all the time but he is still a mess.”  Well, we are looking at two distinct problems here. First, your dog won’t let you brush him and shows signs of aggression because he has not learnt how to deal with being groomed and secondly, brushing him all the time does not necessarily mean you are brushing him properly.

But knowing how to brush your dog doesn’t guarantee that you can do it at home. First you have to let your dog accept being groomed before you can groom your dog and avoid any aggressive behaviour, whether it is towards yourself or the professional groomer.

Before your dog allows you to groom him and accept grooming, you have to be able to touch and handle any part of his body without struggle.  Giving your dog the opportunity of becoming accustomed to being handled and groomed makes the experience a lot more pleasant.

Two important tips to remember are: First, start at a very early age, preferably as soon as you bring them into your home. Begin by touching different areas of their bodies in a gentle way. Praise them if they behave and give them a little treat as a reward. If you do this often enough, your dog will be more at ease and will let you and the professional groomer handle him without signs of aggression and;

Secondly, learn the proper way to brush him in order to avoid a messy and matted coat because in most cases, if it gets to messy, it will be very difficult to fix and in the end, your dog will not be so furry anymore.

We would also like to mention that you need to make sure that your dog is being professionally groomed as often as he needs to be, depending on the type of coat he has. For example, if you own a Golden Doodle, Poodle, Bichon, Shit-zu, etc., then these types of coats which can be curly and long, require a grooming every 4 to 5 weeks in order to keep your dog tangle-free and looking its very best.

Clipping or grinding their nails is another very important part of grooming. Long nails on a dog is unhealthy and uncomfortable. We often use the example:  Your dog running with long nails is like you running in very high heels. Think about how difficult that would be to do and how sore your feet would be in the end. A dog’s nails should be shortened approximately every 3 weeks. Many dogs hate having their nails clipped and they often do get aggressive towards us or they move around and get pushy so avoiding this means having them exposed to the process often.

Since we are on the topic of aggression, we would like to point out that at Montreal Dogs, we DO NOT use any type of tranquilizer or other medication to avoid the aggression. We do not believe in doing so since we are aware of the side effects that these tranquilizers may have especially when used often.  We are professionally trained to deal with any type of behaviour and we do so by handling them with patience and care. The outcome is much more efficient and pleasant.

We meet different breeds of dogs, as well as different types of coats. We have seen the best conditions as well as the worst. Our primary concern is for the dog. With this in mind, our professional grooming facilities offer a safe and comfortable environment for your dog or cat to have a happy experience. We will accommodate all your pet’s needs, such as a gentle wash for sensitive skin, a particular cut, or simply a beautiful manicure using our grinding system which not only shortens the nails but also files them for a smoother finish. Every dog has a different need so don’t be afraid to speak with our professional groomer about any issues or questions you may have, such as the proper way to brush your dog at home to avoid messy and tangled coats, or how often your dog requires a professional grooming.  We will be more than happy to answer all of your questions in order to make the grooming process a good experience for everyone.

Whether you own a cat or a dog or both, we can accommodate them all. Our grooming services are meant to pamper all our furry clients.
